This pioneering Progressive Rock band was so in at the time - that many musicians flocked to them to try and be a part of the scene. Most notably, Sir Elton John failed to pass the audition. The most complex of the Progressive Rock bands - their dissonant counterpoint made them in a stratosphere all by themselves. The band morphed from the late 60s obscure pop band, Simon Dupree and the Big Sound. This band included all three of the Shulman brothers, Derek (a.k.a Simon Dupree) and the band had one top 10 U.K. hit in 1967, Kites. Vocalist and Keyboardist Kerry Minnear studied at the Royal Academy of Music. Gentle Giant finally broke through to American audiences with the political concept album, The Power and the Glory. One of the amazing things about Gentle Giant is that most of the members are multi-instrumentalists. Their last studio album was produced by radio consultant Lee Abrams. Mr. Abrams is currently the Chief Programming Officer for XM Radio.
